considered the most successful hybrid and thought by many to be the most
beautiful water-lily of all, with l0-inch blooms shaped like a chalice.
Very double, fragrant, and of clear, warm pink with a fresh crisp texture.
Stamens are yellow, tipped rose.N. gigantea-A big-flowering species which originated in the lakes and marshes of Australia and New Guinea, sky-blue flowers a foot in diameter. alba-Large, peony-shaped, white flowers held well above the water with cadmium-yellow, club-shaped stamens. Fragrant. Leaves pale green above and below, with indented margin.
Escarboucle. The blooms of this giant red (up to eight and nine inches
in diameter) do we]] for everybody, adjusting their size to whatever
pool space is given them. Very prolific bloomer.ALBERT-DE-LESTANG forma media-Like the species type but considerably smaller. violacea-Still smaller, with much darker-blue flowers. GOLDEN WEST -As pretty a lily as I have ever seen, salmon-pink when it
opens, changing within a day or two to warm apricot with a heart of
golden stamens. Free blooming and fragrant. Foliage is green, speckled
maroon. N. gracilis-A long-stemmed Mexican species with lily-of-the-valley fragrance. Small blooms are white with yellow stamens. Profuse bloomer and exceptionally fine for experiment, for it hybridizes readily. Crossed with N. capensis zanzibariensis, it has produced some of the finest tropical hybrids. Another of the questioned species, perhaps not a species but only a rough, uncultivated form of N. flavovirens. azurea-Same as parent species with very pale-blue flowers. purpurea-Rich-purple flowers. rosea-A pink form. rubra-Rich, deep red. N. Henkeliana -A novelty among tropicals, medium-sized, flat, medium-blue
flowers with a delicious violet fragrance. HENRY SHAW -Pring. An old and ever-popular variety ,with huge, saucer-shaped
blooms the color of bluebells, sweet scented, open from sunup to sundown.
Stamens are chrome-yellow. Adapts growth to large or small pool, blooming
quite freely in either. N. heudelotii-Grows in shallow, slow-flowing streams of central Africa and is the baby of all tropicals, with leaves only 2 inches in diameter and bluish-white flowers only half an inch across. Interesting to collectors, but not a rewarding garden plant. Dr. Pring is currently using the species to breed tropical pygmy varieties. nana-Miniature white blooms on an even smaller plant.
