BEST SIX

Nymphaea Gladstoniana, W. B. Shaw, N. Marliacea chromatella, James Brydon, N. somptuosa, N. colossea, Comanche, and N. gloriosa can be depended upon, just about anywhere in the country, to be among the first to bloom each season.

LARGEST (PLATES 34 AND 35)

Nymphaea Gladstoniana, Escarboucle, William Doogue, N. Andreana, Mme. Julien Chifflot, and Sunrise among the hardies, N. gigantea, N. capensis zanzibariensis, Aviator Pring, Peach Blow, Pink Platter, Shell Pink, Talisman, and Wild Rose among the day-blooming tropicals, N. dentata magnifica, N. Omarana, Missouri, James Gurney, and B. C. Berry among night-blooming tropicals, with the latter two producing the very largest blooms.

MOST PROLIFIC

Nymphaea alba candidissima, W. B. Shaw, James Brydon, N. Lay-dekeri rosea, purpurata and fulgens, and N. Marliacea chromatella and carnea for the hardies; the day-blooming N. flavovirens, William Stone, Mrs. C. W. Ward, August Koch, Director Moore, Henry Shaw, and Pink Pearl; and the night-blooming N. dentata magnifica and N. Omarana among the tropicals are free blooming With a fine, long succession of flowers.

MOST FRAGRANT

The most fragrant hardies are Nymphaea odorata and N. tetragona and their varieties, and I give a special personal recommendation for James Brydon, Helen Fowler, and Rose Arey. All the day-blooming tropicals are fragrant, most of them very fragrant.

WITH DOUBLE BLOSSOMS

The double-flowered water-lilies with the most distinctive forms, in my opinion, include among hardies Nymphaea tuberosa Richardsonii, James Brydon, Gloire de Temple sur Lot, Gonnere, and N. Marliacea chromatella; and among tropicals, those of N. capensis zanzibariensis, a day bloomer, and the night-blooming N. dentata magnifica, Missouri, James Gurney, and Sturtevant.

FOR DEEP OR SHALLOW POOLS

Water-lilies that flourish in deeper than ordinary pools include the Nymphaea alba candidissima, N. odorata gigantea, N. tuberosa and N. Marliacea albida, rosea and carnea, all hardies.

Hardies which do well in shallow pools, say a foot or even less of water, include N. odorata minor, N. tetragona and helvola and varieties, and Jo Anne Pring, N. mexicana, N. Laydekeri rosea and fulgens, N. pygmaea and varieties.

Practically all day- and night-blooming tropicals do well in shallow water.
