>Wintering the Tropicals

In areas which do not have killing frosts, tropical water-lilies can be left outdoors in pond or pool the year around, and cultivated much the same as hardies. The tropicals are not seasonal, and they will continue to bloom until their foliage is killed by frost. Being such heavy feeders, they must be given a new supply of soil-fertilizer mixture each summer if they are planted in containers. On their own in a natural mud bottom, they probably will not need this attention.

In most sections, however, the tubers of tropicals must be taken inside if they are to be kept alive. Their winter storage methods-burying in clean damp sand-have been discussed earlier in this section under Root Division

Day to Day Care

Beyond coping with plant and animal pests, all the day-to-day culture of water-lilies amounts to is casual grooming from time to time. Keep an eye on your more expansive lilies and accessory aquatics. If they produce more foliage than you want, cut and discard some of the excess leaves. Cut, or pinch off down near the rootstock, leaving no stems to decompose and foul the pool water. Remove the stems of expired blooms in the same way and for the same reason.
